               2011 RACE UPDATES

4-4-2011

Everyone at Effertz Motor Sports LLC are really excited about the 2011 season. There have been a few crew member changes to help things run smoothly in the pits. The car is almost ready, just waiting to get the motor running and the final setup done.
YouTube has been enjoyed by Sawyer's fans to go back and view each weeks races. We look forward to posting more in 2011.

Sawyer,
I really have to thank my Parents Jack and Mary Effertz and Pete Berken, Don Hawkins, and Doug Dohr for all the endless hours of help preparing this Racecar, and a special thanks to all my valued sponsors of which I hope you all patronize.

Sawyer

2011 Plans

Sawyer will compete nightly at WIR in the Limited Late Model class for the second year.  Sawyer's rookie was a learning year. This year he will make a run at the championship. Effertz Motor Sports will staff the team with crew members who will be an asset to the team.

2011 Week 1. After minimal testing, the car ran above our expectaions. We qualified 10th wuith a 20.77, and started 5th in the heat and took 2nd on the second lap. With the lead car blocking any pass Sawyer decided to take 2nd and not risk a wreck. The feature we started pole and after 2 laps help a 10 car lead, then a caution came out and a red flag. When the restart was flagged we fell to 4th. After running over Guerke for 10 laps, Conrad finally came up and moved Guerke over and we stayed in 4th. After car inspection we noticed an oil leak which was spraying on the rear tires while racing, causing the car to get loose. The repairs have been made and we are ready for week 2

Week 2 was a 12th place qualifying. Sawyer had to leave as did Cody and Seth to Graduation ceremonies at Kimberly High. Sawyer returned to the track in time for the Feature. Leading the race at the green and through cautions by over 10 car lengths, a restart on lap 18 resulted in a rear hit from the Meyerhoffer car at the green. Sawyer lost the lead on the last lap to finish 2nd. We are still excited by 2 good race weeks.

Week 3. From Green to Checker flag it was Sawyers race to win. After 4 cautions and 30 laps, Sawyer went on to win the Red White and Blue Series Feature. All the restarts were close and there was contact on the last restart but Sawyer was able to hang on and never look back. So far this year Sawyer has led all but 7 laps of the 70 Limited Late Model laps.

Week 4 was a good week except for a few issues in the Feature.. we dropped from 4th to 6th in points but still have time to make it up.

Week 5 rained out

Week 6 we qualified 4th and finished 3rdin the fast dash. In the Feature we started 9th and made it through 2 cautions and were battling for 6th when Oudenhoven spun in turn 1, Conrad followed and rolled up the track and we got tangled up with him. It caused enough front end damage that we could not continue.

Week 7 was a good week.. had some tire issues and qualified poorly, took second in our heat and won the Semi and started 17th in the Feature.. making our way to a 3rd place finish. Great job Sawyer.. Now we are ready do defend the Red Race Win this Thursday at the White race.

Week 8, White race. We started 3rd, and got tied up behind the pole sitter and got freight trained back to 7th. After finally making several moves to confuse the 16 driver we got by and went on to take 5th place, holding off Todd Verhagen and Gary Natrop.

Week 9. Qualified 7th, started 6th in the heat and made it to 3rd on lap 7. Down the front stretch and the white flag, Sawyer looked on the inside of Brad Anthony and made a move going into turn 1. Anthony cut down to cut off Sawyer. Sawyer had a strong run and held his position and dove down into the grass in turn 1, and came back up onto the track in front of Anthony to finish 2nd. Started 4th in the Feature and got held up by VanCamp. After falling back to 7th, Sawyer made his way back to 5th. On lap 12 he got a nose to the inside of Cory Kempkes and the reamining 8 laps the two cars were side by side battling for 4th. On lap 19 Sawyer got ahead of Cory and took 4th place. Hats off to both drivers. Sawyer and Cory have been racing together for 10 years since go karts and both drivers complemented each other on the fun racing.

Week 10 Rained out

Week 11 Was a good night.. We had a poor qualifying night, 17th. Raced in through the Semi and started 17th in the Feature and had a great 5th place finish.

Week 12 we qualified 8th, started 6th in the heat and finished 2nd. We started 2nd in the feature and in lap 2 Strelka got loose in 2 and ran into Sawyer. Strelka was upset and ran into Sawyer under caution in turn 3 and slammed into him on turn 1. The corner workers claimed they didnt see this. One spotter said Sawyer ran into Strelka  2 other spotters said Sawyer should keep his position, that Strelka hit sawyer. Sawyers spotter questioned Marty Nussbaum and Marty said Sawyer ran into Strelka. Our spotter then made a calm comment that Marty was doing a "crappy job and should be replaced" and Marty being the Vp of the club parked Sawyer for the night for verbal abuse to an official.  This was a snap decision and should have been discussed after the races in the pit shack, and if there was an issue or violation, there are bylaws to follow stating that if a driver or team member gets out of line it is a $50 fine the first offense, and allowed Sawyer to continue.  This is the second issue we have had involving Strelka and the disqualifying call made by Marty to park Sawyer.
Strelka did come into the pit shack and apologize to Sawyer for his actions for running to him under caution. Thanks Brett for the apology, it shows that drivers do respect each other.  Racing is a passionate sport and the worse action to be taken is one that is taken to quickly.

2011 Blue race Week 13 Great night again in the Red White and Blue Series. Qualified 11th and started outside front row.. Sawyer took the lead on the first lap and never looked back. Leading from the drop of the green to the checker to win the 2011 Blue race. Pete Berken did a good job getting the car ready for his last red White and Blue State Championship Series as our crew chief. Doug Dohr talked Sawyer through all 30 laps, keeping Sawyer up front after 5 caution restarts. Sawyer ended up 2nd in  points in the series, just 7 behind Natrop. It was a fantastic night for our Sponsors. Merkts Cheese brought out 8 coolers filled with cheese that were handed out to fans during the races. Afterwards in the pits the Merkts mascot again took time to pos for photos with Sawyer and fans. After the interviews and meetings, Sawyer had time to enjoy the awesome victory. Congratulations Sawyer oon winning the Red and Blue races in the 2011 Series.to

Week 14 was a good week. Qualified 13th, started 2nd in the heat race and finished 2nd. Sawyer had to start 13th in the Feature because of winning the Blue race last week. After several cautions and near wrecks, Sawyer came out of the race in great shape again finishing 5th. This gives Sawyer 2 Feature wins this year and 10 top 5 finishes.

We would like to announce the retirement of our crew chief Pete Berken. Pete has made the decision to leave the team after this race season. Pete has been a valuable member to the team these past 2 years and we wish him the best in his time retired from racing.

Week 15 was a good qualifying night getting 7th, missing the dash by 1/1000 of a second. Started 8th in the heat behind the 36 car of Springstroh. After several attempts to get inside of the 36 car, and the 36's spotter telling the driver to cut off Sawyer, we finally got up to the 36's door in turn 1. Coming out of turn 2 the 36 again came down and Sawyer got into him and the 36 spun. We were aware that Springstroh has spun out over 30 times this season, Several times every night,  and last week while Oudenhoven was alongside going for the lead, the 36 did the same move, cutting off the 1 car and they both spun. We didn't intentially take out the 36 car and apologize for the incident, however both the driver and spotter must understand when a faster car is around him, intentially cutting off that car is unacceptable and will result in a wreck. In the feature we started 4th behind the 36 car again, however on the 3rd lap we cut a left rear tire and had to pit to change it under caution. The track would not run an extra lap so we could rejoin the field so we came out 2 laps down. Sawyer drove the second fastest time in the feature.

So the season at WIR is done. Sawyer finished 7th in points, 5 points ahead of Jesse Oudenhoven. We feel it was a very seccessful season and anticipate 2012 will be Sawyers shot at the championship.

Sept 8th. Well we loaded the car for the last time from Petes shop and are almost cleared out. They say that everything is for a reason, so with Pete wanting us out of the shop, we are excited about Effertz Motor Sports move into a brand new building by November 1st.  Check back for updates on the new shop.

Sept 9th Sawyer ran the Fall shootout in Marshfield. He had never seen the track before and did awesome. He qualified 4th and satrted 7 th in the feature and after getting shuffled to 15th behind the local cars, he raced to a 5th place finish. We want to thank Mike Springstrogh for coming on board as our new crew chief. Sawyer and Mike seem to have a great working chemestry.
